since its first season in 1973. Spanning April
through June, all Championship tournaments are governed
by a uniform set of rules controlling minimum lengths
for qualifying billfish, line class, fishing hours and

Entering its thirtieth year in 2003, the Bahamas Billfish
Championship has grown to a world class tournament-fishing
series that takes place in the Bahama Out Islands. Spanning
April through June, all Championship tournaments are
governed by a uniform set of rules controlling minimum
lengths for qualifying billfish, line class, fishing
hours and entry fees. Anglers can fish any or all the
tournaments with cumulative points determining the overall
Bahamas Billfish Champions.
A dozen or so regulars that participated in billfish
tournaments at Bimini, Cat Cay, Chub Cay and Walkers
Cay started the Championship originally in 1968 as an
informal competition with a title that was basically
symbolic. The series went uninterrupted until 1972 when
nearly all tournament activities, both in the Bahamas
and the U.S., were curtailed because of the fuel embargo.
The Championship resumed in 1973 and has maintained
a consecutive annual schedule that has included as many
as six tournaments covering Bimini, the Berry Islands,
the Abacos, Cat Cay, Paradise Island and North Eleuthera.
Registration Information
Membership registration in the Bahamas Billfish Championship
is $1000.00 and the entry fee for each tournament
is $1500.00. The tournament entry fee covers T-shirts
and hosted social functions at the tournament for four
people. Additional social tickets are available
at $250.00 per person. Participants must be signed up
for tournaments with the BBC office before resorts will
accept slip and/or room reservations. The resorts
receive a weekly list from our office indicating the
teams entered in each tournament. The resorts
will only confirm reservations for those teams entered
in the tournaments with priority going to those who
have signed up for the entire BBC series.
Angling Rules
All anglers and crewmembers are expected to be familiar
with the IGFA Salt Water Angling Rules. The angler must
hook, fight and bring the fish to gaff or the point
of release unaided by any other person. No one other
than the angler may touch the rod. IGFA Salt Water Angling
Rules apply at all Bahamas Billfish Championship tournaments
with exceptions stated on the BBC website.
